At my local supermarket I always choose to be served by a lovely, but rarely happy lady.
Still beautiful, although the years had took their toll on her face, emotional burdens had taken the spark out of her eyes, day in – day out sitting at a job that made her skin pale.
I know her life story all too well.
We are friends…in those 10 – 15 minutes once a week at the end of my shopping trip. Whilst I’m packing my shopping, we do a quick recap of her last week.
She is divorced.
Single mum for the last 5 years. Had to move into the flat, after selling family home. Struggling financially…supporting two kids. Long time ago – before her kids came along – she was working in London. She used to be a project manager and worked in the City.
She must have been very beautiful before. Her face is fine. She has an amazing figure. Smart eyes. Kind smile.
Then after kids she had decided 19 years!!! Ago to be with her children.
She devoted herself to her family.
Since divorce…on the top of the checkout job- she also does cleaning jobs here and there.
She is not able to talk about herself.
But then… When she talks about her kids- her face is glowing… her eyes sparkle…she is alive.
When I ask her – how she is – she unconvincingly says: ” I’m alright”, and switches to proudly telling me about her kids.
She must be mid 50s….this lady is my hero…
We have so many silent heroes amongst us.
Mothers that give their hearts, their lives to bring kids.
They have given up on their dreams.. their careers…to provide the best life they can for their kids…
She used to be a project manager- now she is a cleaner…
Last time I thought to myself- what could this lady become if she just BELIEVED SHE CAN?
Retrained? Started her own business?
Written a book?
Created an amazing drawing?
Become CEO of the company?
Retrain to be a scientist.
Become an amazing baker?
Gifted jewellery maker?
Song writer?
Singer?
IF YOU THINK YOU CAN, OR YOU THINK YOU CANT- YOU ARE RIGHT.
SO WHAT CAN YOU BE ? IMAGINE.
ALLOW YOURSELF TO DREAM AND TO DRAW AND TO BECOME ?
In the time that you think is right for you.
